Unity Bancorp Q3 2026 earnings rise 20.1% vs. Q2
Third-quarter earnings and the cash dividend rose, while year-to-date noninterest income fell 34.2%.
Sentiment and the balance of points
Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.
Unity Bancorp (UNTY) reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $17.377 million, up 20.1% from the second quarter, with diluted earnings of $1.70 per share versus $1.42. Net interest income rose 7.7% quarter over quarter to $34.291 million, and net interest margin increased 11 basis points to 4.67%.
As of September 30, 2026, gross loans were $2,780.278 million, up 9.3% from year-end 2025, while deposits were $2,559.498 million, up 10.1%. Third-quarter purchases of $27.6 million in transferable federal investment tax credits and $0.6 million in state tax credits produced $2.6 million of tax savings; the effective tax rate was 13.1%, compared with 22.4% in the prior quarter. Year-to-date noninterest income fell 34.2% to $7.156 million, including net securities losses of $0.973 million versus net gains of $4.026 million in the prior-year nine-month period.
The third-quarter cash dividend was increased 6% to $0.17 per common share. James A. Hughes will retire as CEO effective March 31, 2027, and President George Boyan is to succeed him effective April 1, 2027, while continuing as President of the Company and the Bank.
How this balance works
Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.
It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.
Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.
Positive
- Moderate pointThird-quarter net income: $17.377 million, up 20.1% quarter over quarter.
- Minor pointThird-quarter cash dividend increased 6% to $0.17 per share.
Negative
- Moderate pointYear-to-date noninterest income fell 34.2% to $7.156 million.

Unity Bancorp Reports Quarterly Earnings of $17.4 Million
*Core earnings is a non-GAAP financial measure. Refer to the Quarterly
Non-GAAP/Core Reconciliation
James A. Hughes, CEO, commented on the financial results:
“We are pleased to report another strong quarter for Unity, highlighted by net income of $17.4 million, or $1.70 per diluted share, and continued momentum across our core banking franchise. Loan and deposit growth remained robust, net interest income increased, net interest margin expanded, and asset quality improved meaningfully during the quarter. These results reflect the ongoing success of our relationship-driven banking model and the strength of the markets we serve.
During the quarter, we also completed the purchase of transferable federal investment tax credits, which reduced our tax expense and provided a $2.5 million benefit to earnings. Importantly, even excluding this one-time benefit, our underlying financial performance remained strong and was supported by healthy customer activity, disciplined balance sheet management, and steady execution across the organization. While interest rate expectations have shifted and deposit gathering remains competitive, we continue to see attractive growth opportunities throughout our markets. Credit quality trends are encouraging, our capital and liquidity positions remain strong, and customer engagement levels continue to support healthy loan and deposit production.
Looking ahead, we are confident in Unity's long-term prospects as we prepare for the planned leadership transition next year to our President, George Boyan. Mr. Boyan has been deeply involved in every aspect of our strategic and operational execution, and I am confident that Unity is well-positioned for continued success under his leadership. With a strong balance sheet, a talented team, and a growing customer base, we remain focused on delivering sustainable growth and long-term value for our shareholders.”

This press release contains certain supplemental financial information, described in the table above, which has been determined by methods other than U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”) that management uses in its analysis of its performance. These non-GAAP financial measures are “adjusted net income,” “adjusted net income per share - basic,” “adjusted net income per share - diluted,” “adjusted return on average assets,” and "adjusted return on average equity."
Management believes that these non-GAAP financial measures provide valuable insights into understanding our financial results by excluding certain items that can distort our core business results. This allows investors to better understand our ongoing operations and assess our future potential, while still being transparent about the adjustments made to arrive at these non-GAAP figures. These non-GAAP measures should not be considered a substitute for GAAP basis measures and results and the Company strongly encourages investors to review its consolidated financial statements in their entirety and not to rely on any single financial measure. Because non-GAAP financial measures are not standardized, it may not be possible to compare these financial measures with other companies’ non-GAAP financial measures having the same or similar names.
In addition to the items noted above, defined footnotes are included in the Quarterly Non-GAAP/Core Reconciliation table above. Income annualized is calculated using income for the period divided by the number of days in the period, then multiplied by total days in the year. Average equity is calculated using the sum of daily equity balance for the period, divided by the number of days in the period.
