Key Terms

thermal paper technical
Paper coated with a heat-sensitive chemical layer that darkens where a thermal printhead applies heat, used for receipts, tickets, labels and similar printed outputs; it does not require ink or toner but must be used in a compatible thermal printer. The image produced can fade or darken further with exposure to heat, sunlight, oils or certain chemicals, and thermal paper is distinct from ordinary bond or laser paper because its coating both enables printing and determines its durability.
flexographic printing technical
Flexographic printing is a high-speed commercial printing method that uses flexible, raised-image plates mounted on rotating cylinders to transfer ink onto a wide range of substrates such as paper, cardboard, plastic film and corrugated board. It works like a modern version of a rubber stamp carried around a press: the raised areas on the plate pick up fast-drying, low-viscosity inks from an anilox roller and press them onto the material as it moves continuously through the press, making it well suited for long runs, packaging, labels and flexible materials. Because it uses flexible plates and liquid inks, flexography handles uneven surfaces and non-paper substrates better than many sheet-fed processes but offers less photographic detail than high-resolution methods like gravure or offset lithography.
