How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Key Terms

3 terms
non-gaap financial measures financial
"New Oriental provides non-GAAP financial measures on net income attributable to New Oriental"
Non-GAAP financial measures are numbers companies use to show their financial performance that exclude certain expenses or income. They help investors see how the company might perform without one-time costs or other unusual items, giving a different perspective from official reports. However, since they can be adjusted, they don’t always tell the full story and should be looked at alongside standard financial figures.
ads financial
"Each ADS represents ten common shares."
Ads are paid promotional messages a company places across media — online, on TV, in print, or on social platforms — to attract customers, explain products, or shape public perception. For investors, ads matter because they drive sales growth, affect how much a company must spend to win customers, and influence brand strength and long-term value. Ads can also create regulatory or reputational risk if claims are misleading, which can affect profits and stock price.
deferred revenue financial
"New Oriental's deferred revenue, which represents cash collected upfront from customers"
Cash a company has already received for goods or services it has promised but not yet delivered; it's recorded as a liability because the company still owes that product, service, or future revenue recognition. For investors, deferred revenue signals upcoming work or deliveries that will convert into reported sales over time and affects short-term obligations, cash flow quality, and how quickly a firm can grow recognized revenue—think of it like prepaid subscriptions or gift cards a business must honor later.

Michael Yu, New Oriental's Executive Chairman, commented, "We are delighted to start our fiscal year 2027 with strong top line growth of 23.1%, above our current full year guidance range. Revenues from overseas test preparation and consulting business increased by approximately 7.7%. In addition, our domestic test preparation business targeting adults and university students grew by approximately 22.3% year over year, while our new educational business initiatives grew by approximately 24.7% year over year. This quarter, our non-academic tutoring courses reached around 60 cities, attracting approximately 476,000 student enrollments, and our intelligent learning system and devices were adopted across around 60 cities, with approximately 515,000 active paid users. In this new fiscal year, we will continue to deepen the execution of our core strategy, with continuous improvement in teaching and product quality as our primary growth drivers. We are confident that this disciplined approach will enable us to generate healthy and sustainable value over the long term. Alongside our growth momentum, our cost optimization and operational efficiency initiatives have entered a new phase this year and have achieved notable progress. New Oriental Home, our newly established comprehensive customer service platform integrated across all departments, had already served over 1,678,000 families across 69 cities by the end of this quarter. This platform has already begun to demonstrate its ability to enhance customer loyalty and retention and strengthen our cross-selling capabilities. We believe it will further increase customer lifetime value while lowering our overall customer acquisition costs. We remain firmly committed to building a stronger brand and creating enduring value for our customers and shareholders."

Chenggang Zhou, New Oriental's Chief Executive Officer, added, "This fiscal quarter, we continued to execute our strategy of disciplined capacity expansion to balance revenue growth with operational efficiency. Equally important, AI remains at the core of our organizational priorities. This fiscal year, we will maintain measured investment in AI to enhance the competitiveness of our existing products, develop new AI-powered education products that can be commercialized efficiently, and apply AI more broadly to reduce labor costs and improve operating efficiency, while providing stronger support to our staff. In this fiscal quarter, East Buy expanded its private label portfolio to over 1,000 SPUs and its Douyin channel matrix to more than 30 vertical accounts. Leveraging New Oriental's learning center network, East Buy now has four offline experience stores and has developed instant retail capabilities, including one-hour delivery trials in Beijing and Shanghai. For this fiscal year, East Buy will advance its multi-channel strategy, accelerate private label development, refine App membership operations and enhance supply chain efficiency to support sustainable long-term growth."

Stephen Zhihui Yang, New Oriental's Executive President and Chief Financial Officer, commented, "We are pleased to report that, in this fiscal quarter, both our core education business and East Buy recorded year over year expansion in their respective operating margins, primarily attributable to enhanced operational efficiency and improved utilization of our learning centers. Concurrently, East Buy's rapid growth increased its share of total revenue, and this shift in our revenue mix kept our consolidated operating margin at a stable level during this quarter. We view this as an anticipated consequence of scaling new businesses, and we remain confident in the margin trajectory of each business line on a standalone basis. In this fiscal year, we will remain firmly committed to our strategy of pursuing balanced revenue and profit growth, and we will continue to deepen our cost reduction and efficiency enhancement initiatives across key business lines. Through these efforts, we aim to deliver sustainable, healthy growth over the long term while steadily enhancing our profitability."

About Non-GAAP Financial Measures

To supplement New Oriental's consolidated financial results presented in accordance with GAAP, New Oriental uses the following measures defined as non-GAAP financial measures by the SEC: net income excluding share-based compensation expenses, amortization of intangible assets resulting from business acquisitions, (gain)/loss from fair value change of investments, loss/(gain) from equity method investments, impairment of long-term investments and goodwill, gain on disposals of investments and others, as well as tax effects on non-GAAP adjustments; operating income excluding share-based compensation expenses, amortization of intangible assets resulting from business acquisitions, and impairment of goodwill; operating margin excluding share-based compensation expenses, amortization of intangible assets resulting from business acquisitions, and impairment of goodwill; and basic and diluted net income per ADS and per share excluding share-based compensation expenses, amortization of intangible assets resulting from business acquisitions, loss/(gain) from fair value change of investments, loss/(gain) from equity method investments, impairment of long-term investments and goodwill, gain on disposals of investments and others, as well as tax effects on non-GAAP adjustments. The presentation of these non-GAAP financial measures is not intended to be considered in isolation or as a substitute for the financial information prepared and presented in accordance with GAAP. For more information on these non-GAAP financial measures, please see the tables captioned "Reconciliations of non-GAAP measures to the most comparable GAAP measures" set forth at the end of this release.

New Oriental believes that these non-GAAP financial measures provide meaningful supplemental information regarding its performance and liquidity by excluding from each non-GAAP measure certain items that may not be indicative of its operating performance from a cash perspective. New Oriental believes that both management and investors benefit from referring to these non-GAAP financial measures in assessing its performance and when planning and forecasting future periods. These non-GAAP financial measures also facilitate management's internal comparisons to New Oriental's historical performance and liquidity. New Oriental believes these non-GAAP financial measures are useful to investors in allowing for greater transparency with respect to supplemental information used by management in its financial and operational decision making. A limitation of using these non-GAAP measures is that they exclude from each non-GAAP measure certain items that have been and will continue to be for the foreseeable future a significant recurring expense in its business. Management compensates for these limitations by providing specific information regarding the GAAP amounts excluded from each non-GAAP measure. The accompanying tables have more details on the reconciliations between GAAP financial measures that are most directly comparable to non-GAAP financial measures.
