GreenPower's BEAST, which received New Mexico certification during an inspection by the state this week, is a purpose-built 40-foot Type D all-electric, zero-emission school bus with seating for up to 84 students. Designed from the ground up as an EV, it is a fully integrated structure that features a strong and corrosion resistant aluminum body made from extruded aluminum, manufactured by Constellium, seamlessly mated to a high strength steel Truss (bus) chassis. The complete flat floor design allows for adjustable track seating with no wheel wells in the passenger compartment, and the high floor keeps students out of the impact zone. Combined port charging is standard with Level 2 rates up to 19.2 kW and DC Fast Charging rates up to 85 kW, allowing for full charging in less than three hours.

"We were pleased that the BEAST passed inspection requirements in New Mexico this week just as the Nano BEAST did last year prior to the deployment of those vehicles. Both the Type A Nano BEAST and Type D BEAST school buses are now certified compliant in New Mexico and are available for any deployments," Riley continued.

During the first year of the pilot, GreenPower's Nano BEAST successfully transported hundreds of school kids across the state for more than 17,000 miles to and from school in a safe, secure and sustainable manner. Deployment of those three school buses eliminated more than two tons of CO2 tailpipe emissions. That along with zero NOx and carbon monoxide emissions, a healthier ride is provided for kids riding inside the school bus.

The Nano BEASTs met all range requirements in year one with specific examples of buses going as much as 132 miles on a single charge. Depending on the route and charging infrastructure, buses went without midday charging and, in some cases, multiple days without charging while still meeting the transportation needs. There were even cases where the vehicle not only ran a morning and afternoon route, but also a midday route without charging problems or range issues.

Year one of the pilot did expose areas that needed to be addressed. The number one issue for the deployment was the electrical infrastructure serving parts of the state, particularly rural areas. An upgrade to electrical power to school, similar to what GreenPower had installed for the West Las Vegas School District, will be necessary to assist schools in long-term transition to cleaner, all-electric school buses.

As a direct response to feedback from school districts and transportation providers in the pilot who encountered challenges maintaining cabin heat and early morning charging, GreenPower's engineering team worked diligently to seamlessly integrate additional electric heaters into the Nano BEAST's passenger cabin, ensuring optimal performance without sacrificing range or efficiency. The cold weather package is now standard as a result of the pilot. (See May 21, 2026 press release for further details.)
