Insights

MACOM's new SATCOM portfolio expands market reach with high-performance GaN technology across multiple frequency bands.

MACOM's announcement of new satellite communications products represents a strategic expansion of their RF and optical portfolio. The company is leveraging its GaN-on-SiC (Gallium Nitride on Silicon Carbide) technology to deliver high-power amplifiers across multiple frequency bands - C-Band, X-Band, Ku-Band, and Ka-Band - targeting both commercial SATCOM and defense markets.

The technical specifications are impressive, with their C-Band and X-Band power amplifiers achieving output powers of 60W and 130W, while their Ka-Band solution delivers 25W of saturated output power with 25% power added efficiency (PAE). These performance metrics position MACOM competitively in the growing SATCOM infrastructure market.

Particularly noteworthy is MACOM's expansion into RF over Fiber (RFoF) technologies with their Th-Mod optical transmitter offering up to 70 GHz bandwidth and VPX modules providing 50 GHz bandwidth. These solutions address the critical need for high-bandwidth signal transmission in modern satellite communication systems.

The timing of this announcement ahead of the International Microwave Symposium indicates MACOM's readiness to showcase working demonstrations to potential customers. By offering these components in multiple package options (die, tab, and flange), MACOM is providing flexibility to system designers working on next-generation satellite communication platforms.

This portfolio expansion strengthens MACOM's position in the growing SATCOM sector where high-performance RF components are essential for enabling increased data throughput and reliability in satellite networks. The diversification across multiple frequency bands also helps MACOM address various market segments within the broader SATCOM industry.

RF Amplifiers:
 C-Band and X-Band
MACOM announces new C-Band and X-Band Power Amplifiers (PAs), targeting both commercial SATCOM and defense applications. Utilizing MACOM’s high performance, GaN-on-SiC production process, the C-Band PAs operate from 5.85 – 6.75 GHz and can achieve high linear power and efficiency with two power levels, 60 W (MAPC-A4019) and 130 W (MAPC-A4017). The X-Band PAs operate from 7.7 – 8.5 GHz and are capable of output power levels of 60 W (MAPC-A4020) and 130 W (MAPC-A4021). The amplifiers are offered in flange packages.

 Ku-Band
MACOM’s CMPA1E1F060 Ku-Band GaN-on-SiC SATCOM MMIC on a copper molybdenum (Cu-Mo) tab (or die on tab) offers high output power and efficiency. It is capable of 60 W continuous wave saturated output power and a power added efficiency (PAE) of 35%. The CMPA1E1F060 supports 25 W of linear output power at IM3 of -25 dBc. It is available as bare die, die on tab or flange packages.

 Ka-Band
