generative artificial intelligence technical
Generative artificial intelligence is a type of computer system that learns patterns from large datasets and produces new content—text, images, audio, designs, or code—rather than just sorting or summarizing existing information, like a virtual apprentice that invents drafts based on what it has seen. Investors pay attention because it can lower costs, speed product development, create new revenue streams and competitive advantages, while also introducing risks around accuracy, intellectual property and regulation that can affect valuation.
S&P 500 financial
The S&P 500 is a broad stock market index that tracks the performance of 500 large U.S. companies, weighted so bigger firms have a larger impact. Investors use it like a thermometer or benchmark to judge how the overall U.S. stock market or a portfolio is doing; movements in the index influence investor sentiment, fund performance, and many passive investment products that aim to match its returns.

concentration risk financial
Concentration risk is the danger that a portfolio, company, or investment relies too heavily on a small number of holdings, customers, suppliers, sectors, or markets, so a single problem can cause a large loss. It matters to investors because it increases the chance of big swings or permanent loss—like putting most of your savings into one stock or one industry instead of spreading it across many different places to reduce fallout from one failure.
technical indicators technical
Tools that analyze past price and trading-volume patterns to generate signals about likely short-term market behavior. Think of them as gauges on a car dashboard or a weather app: they summarize recent data into easy-to-read measures that help traders spot trends, strength, or potential turning points. Investors use them to time entries and exits, manage risk, and confirm or question other research, but they do not guarantee outcomes.

Schwab Center for Financial Research financial
An independent research group within a major financial firm that produces market analysis, investment commentary and educational content for individual and institutional investors. It acts like a team's playbook and map—translating economic trends, market data and investment strategies into clear guidance that helps investors evaluate risks and opportunities. Investors use its reports to inform decisions, compare viewpoints and understand the factors driving market moves.

Nearly 70% of retail clients believe AI can play a meaningful role in investing when paired with human expertise, according to Schwab research

WESTLAKE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Charles Schwab today announced the availability of the firm’s first generative artificial intelligence capability for retail investor clients. Designed to help provide greater clarity to investing, the capability delivers insights that bring together portfolio performance, relevant market news, and curated Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR) commentary in one simple view to provide context on factors that may potentially be impacting a client’s portfolio and why.

Schwab research shows growing client interest in using AI as part of the investing process, particularly when paired with human expertise and support. A recent Schwab survey of nearly 1,000 retail clients* found that:

  • Over 60% of respondents said they’re interested in using AI
  • Nearly 70% believe it can either support routine tasks or play a meaningful role in investing when paired with human expertise

The new portfolio insights capability integrates Schwab data, research, and third-party market news into timely, tailored summaries for each client’s holdings. AI‑powered explanations incorporate Schwab expert commentary to help inform and provide critical context to investors. It is designed to provide information, not investment advice. The capability is covered by Schwab’s privacy, security, and data standards.

“Our clients have made it clear that they want the efficiency of AI combined with guidance from our professionals,” said Jonathan Craig, Head of Retail Investing at Charles Schwab. “As we roll out AI‑powered tools, our focus is on being intentional about how technology and human expertise come together so we can continue to meet clients’ needs and expectations.”

Clients can access the tailored portfolio insights within their existing Schwab.com and Schwab Mobile App experiences on the Account Summary page. The capability began rolling out to clients today, with access expanding to all self-directed, U.S. retail clients by the end of May.

The capability includes:

  • AI-powered summaries of portfolio performance for up to five holdings in a client’s portfolio that saw the most movement since the last day, helping them understand what changed.
  • Summaries of market and industry news related to the S&P 500 equity holdings that may have the biggest impact on a client’s portfolio.
  • Context and commentary from Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR) and other Schwab investment experts relevant to the specific holdings in a client’s portfolio to help explain what may be driving market activity.

Schwab may expand portfolio insights capabilities in the future, providing clients with insights on topics such as concentration risk, asset allocation, and technical indicators.

*An online survey of nearly 1,000 Schwab clients with at least $2,000 in retail assets conducted January 20 – January 27, 2026.
