Fortune Brands Q3 earnings fall 28.8% to $0.42
Updated full-year EPS before charges/gains guidance is $3.20 to $3.30; targeted businesses have combined annualized operating losses of approximately $50 million to $55 million.
Sentiment and the balance of points
Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.
Fortune Brands Innovations (FBIN) reported third-quarter 2026 sales of $1.1137 billion, down 3.1% versus Q3 2025. GAAP diluted EPS was $0.42, down 28.8%, including a $0.47-per-share asset impairment charge. EPS before charges/gains was $1.14, up 4.6%, and included a $0.28 net tax benefit and $0.14 of net tariff refunds.
Fortune Brands updated full-year 2026 guidance to net sales of $4.205 billion to $4.275 billion and EPS before charges/gains of $3.20 to $3.30. Third-quarter operating cash flow was $347.0 million and free cash flow was $331.1 million; net debt was $2.1 billion and net debt-to-EBITDA before charges/gains was 2.5x.
Portfolio actions include a definitive agreement to sell Fiberon for $160 million, subject to the agreement’s terms and conditions; exiting the Moen commercial business serving domestic markets in Asia while continuing supply-chain operations in China; and rationalizing the EMEA operating footprint of a Water segment business. Together, the targeted businesses generate annualized operating losses of approximately $50 million to $55 million on revenue of $320 million to $330 million. The China and EMEA actions are expected to be completed by the third and fourth quarters of 2027, respectively.
How this balance works
Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.
It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.
Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.
Positive
- Moderate pointNine-month operating cash flow increased to $430.6 million from $270.4 million.
Negative
- Moderate pointQ3 GAAP diluted EPS fell 28.8% to $0.42.

Fortune Brands Announces Third Quarter Results,
Taking Action to Revitalize the Company's Performance
Highlights:
DEERFIELD, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--November 3, 2026--Fortune Brands Innovations, Inc. (NYSE: FBIN) (“Fortune Brands” or the “Company”), an industry-leading home, security and digital products company, today announced third quarter 2026 results.
“Fortune Brands is in the early stages of a multi-year turnaround plan to get Back to Business. We are building from a strong foundation of brands that consumers and pros know and trust. Third quarter results were in line with our outlook excluding the tax and tariff benefits, but not where they need to be. Our biggest challenge has been our own execution, and we are taking aggressive steps to drive improvement,” said Fortune Brands Chief Executive Officer Jesse Singh.
“Service levels improved 10 percentage points in the third quarter, with fill rates in the high-90% range entering the fourth quarter. We have realigned the organization around customer-focused segments and expect to have more than 80% of our salaried workforce directly supporting a specific business by year end, up from roughly 40% at the start of the year. In addition, we have strengthened the leadership team with a new Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer and Chief Legal Officer, and new leaders within each of our businesses. We remain on track for $70 million of annualized SG&A savings by the first quarter of 2027. We also entered into a purchase agreement to sell Fiberon, are exiting our commercial operations in China, which we expect to be completed by the third quarter of 2027 and are rationalizing the EMEA operating footprint of a business in our Water segment, which we expect to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2027. Together these businesses generate an annualized operating loss of approximately $50 million to $55 million on revenue of $320 million to $330 million.
“In the fourth quarter, we expect incrementally lower revenue, driven by three things: lower sales from the businesses involved in the portfolio optimization actions, incremental softening in single-family new construction, and a reduction in channel inventory. We are using this quarter’s net tax benefit to fund additional portfolio and alignment actions in the fourth quarter. The work ahead is substantial, but the opportunity is large: we have leading brands, customers and channel partners who want to win with us, and a team that is engaged and moving with urgency. I am confident that our actions will build a stronger, simpler and more customer-focused company that delivers consistent growth, margin expansion and shareholder value over the long term.”
1 Net tariff refunds include gross tariff refunds and interest income (for EPS only), partially offset by increases in directly attributable variable incentive compensation costs and taxes (for EPS only)

2026 Full-Year Guidance
“Looking ahead, we see a softer environment for single-family new construction and expect this part of the market to be down mid to high single digits, with R&R down low single digits for the year. Customers are signaling greater caution and we are taking a more conservative approach to channel inventory given the uncertain macroeconomic environment. We have also made important decisions on dilutive parts of our portfolio, which we expect will help improve future profitability. Those businesses will continue to have an impact on our results for the fourth quarter and the first half of next year. With these factors in mind, we are prudently updating our guidance for net sales and EPS before charges / gains. Fourth quarter and full year net sales are expected to be in the range of $925 million to $995 million and $4,205 million to $4,275 million, respectively. Fourth quarter and full year EPS before charges / gains is expected to be in the range of $0.19 to $0.29 and $3.20 to $3.30, respectively. We also expect full year operating cash flow and free cash flow to be in the range of $480 million to $500 million and $380 million to $410 million, respectively," said Fortune Brands Chief Financial Officer Pete Clifford. "While these actions will weigh on our near-term results, they position us to enter 2027 on stronger footing."

For certain forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures (as used in this press release, EPS before charges / gains), the Company is unable to provide a reconciliation to the most comparable GAAP financial measure because the information needed to reconcile the non-GAAP financial measure to the GAAP financial measure is unavailable due to the inherent difficulty of forecasting the timing and / or amount of various items that have not yet occurred, including the high variability and low visibility with respect to gains and losses associated with our defined benefit plans, and restructuring and other charges, which are each excluded from EPS before charges / gains, other than with respect to the Company’s previously-announced estimated additional non-cash impairment charge for the Fiberon asset group of approximately $175 million to $205 million. As a result, the Company is not otherwise able to reasonably estimate the probable significance of such items. Additionally, estimating such GAAP measures and providing a meaningful reconciliation consistent with the Company’s accounting policies for future periods requires a level of precision that is unavailable for these future periods and cannot be accomplished without unreasonable effort. Forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures are estimated consistent with the relevant definitions and assumptions. For a reconciliation of full year 2026 free cash flow guidance to full year 2026 operating cash flow guidance, see the table entitled “Free Cash Flow” below.

Use of Non-GAAP Financial Information
This press release includes measures not derived in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”), such as diluted earnings (loss) per share before charges / gains, operating income (loss) before charges / gains, operating margin before charges / gains, net debt, net debt to EBITDA before charges / gains, net sales excluding the impact of China, Outdoors net sales excluding the impact of Fiberon and free cash flow. These non-GAAP financial measures should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for any measure derived in accordance with GAAP and may also be inconsistent with similar measures presented by other companies. Reconciliations of these measures to the applicable most closely comparable GAAP measures, and reasons for the Company’s use of these measures, are presented in the attached pages.

Definitions of Terms: Non-GAAP Financial Measures
(a) Operating income (loss) before charges/gains is calculated as operating income (loss) derived in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”), excluding restructuring, other charges/gains, asset impairment charges, manufacturing facility fire, transformation costs and governance advisory services and leadership transitions. Operating income (loss) before charges/gains is a measure not derived in accordance with GAAP. Management uses this measure to evaluate the returns generated by the Company and its business segments. Management believes this measure provides investors with helpful supplemental information regarding the underlying performance of the Company from period to period. This measure may be inconsistent with similar measures presented by other companies.
(b) Free cash flow is cash flow from operations calculated in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP") less capital expenditures. Free cash flow does not include adjustments for certain non-discretionary cash flows such as mandatory debt repayments. Free cash flow is a measure not derived in accordance with GAAP. Management believes that free cash flow provides investors with helpful supplemental information about the Company's ability to fund internal growth, make acquisitions, repay debt and related interest, pay dividends and repurchase common stock. This measure may be inconsistent with similar measures presented by other companies.
(c) EBITDA before charges/gains is calculated as net income (loss) in accordance with GAAP, excluding depreciation, amortization of intangible assets, restructuring and other charges/gains, interest expense, asset impairment charge, manufacturing facility fire, transformation costs, governance advisory services and leadership transitions, and income taxes. Management believes this measure provides investors with helpful supplemental information about the Company's ability to fund internal growth, make acquisitions and repay debt and related interest. This measure may be inconsistent with similar measures presented by other companies.
(d) Net debt is calculated as long-term debt less cash and cash equivalents. Net debt is a measure not derived in accordance with GAAP. Management believes this supplemental measure is useful as it reflects the Company's debt obligations after considering cash and cash equivalents available to repay such obligations.
(e) Net debt-to-EBITDA before charges/gains ratio is calculated as net debt divided by EBITDA before charges/gains for the trailing 52 weeks. Management believes net debt-to-EBITDA before charges/gains is a useful measure of the Company's leverage position because it provides investors with helpful supplemental information about the Company's ability to service and repay outstanding debt using earnings from the underlying performance of the Company. This measure may be inconsistent with similar measures presented by other companies.
(f) Diluted earnings (loss) per share before charges/gains is calculated as net income on a diluted per-share basis, excluding restructuring, other charges/gains, asset impairment charges, manufacturing facility fire, transformation costs, governance advisory services and leadership transitions and a discrete tax impact of the China commercial exit. This measure is not in accordance with GAAP. Management uses this measure to evaluate the Company's overall performance and believes it provides investors with helpful supplemental information about the Company's underlying performance from period to period. However, this measure may not be consistent with similar measures presented by other companies.
(g) Operating margin is calculated as operating income in accordance with GAAP, divided by the GAAP net sales. The operating margin before charges/gains is calculated as operating income, excluding restructuring, other charges/gains, asset impairment charges, manufacturing facility fire, transformation costs, governance advisory services and leadership transitions, divided by GAAP net sales. The operating margin before charges/gains is not a measure derived in accordance with GAAP. Management uses this measure to evaluate the returns generated by the Company and its business segments. Management believes that this measure provides investors with helpful supplemental information about the Company's underlying performance from period to period. However, this measure may not be consistent with similar measures presented by other companies.

Additional Information:
For certain forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures (as used in this press release, EPS before charges / gains), the Company is unable to provide a reconciliation to the most comparable GAAP financial measure because the information needed to reconcile the non-GAAP financial measure to the GAAP financial measure is unavailable due to the inherent difficulty of forecasting the timing and / or amount of various items that have not yet occurred, including the high variability and low visibility with respect to gains and losses associated with our defined benefit plans, and restructuring and other charges, each of which are excluded from EPS before charges / gains, other than with respect to the Company’s previously-announced estimated additional non-cash impairment charge for the Fiberon asset group of approximately $175 million to $205 million.
