A preferred share is a type of company stock that behaves like a mix of ownership and a fixed-income investment: it typically pays regular dividends at a set rate and has priority over common shares for those payments and for claims on assets if the company is liquidated. Investors care because preferred shares offer steadier income and higher claim priority than common stock, but usually with limited upside potential and little or no voting control.
