New 5G cellular extender delivers primary 5G or automatic failover, with dual-SIM backup that fails over cell-to-cell up to 10X faster, to locations a conventional router cannot reach

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII, www.digi.com), a leading global provider of wireless WAN connectivity products and services, today announced the launch of Digi EX61, a rugged indoor/outdoor 5G cellular extender designed to bring connectivity to locations a conventional router cannot reach, indoors or outdoors.

Digi is extending its enterprise branch portfolio with Digi EX61, built for the same multi-year replacement cycle driving Digi EX60, as carriers continue shifting investment toward 5G. Enterprises operating retail stores, medical offices and branch locations often have a network closet nowhere near a window, where cellular signal strength suffers, even as point-of-sale terminals, patient check-in tools and other critical systems depend on that connection staying up.

Digi EX61 is built for that gap. Use it as a primary 5G connection, or as automatic failover from wired to wireless, from wherever signal is strongest. A second wireless connection using Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) adds tertiary failover or provides a backup when no wired link exists. Because DSDS keeps the second cellular connection live in the background rather than activating it only after an outage, cell-to-cell failover is up to 10X faster than traditional approaches.

Digi EX61 also supports low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite services, such as Starlink, over Ethernet. Use LEO as a primary connection or as an additional failover option, and combine connections with WAN bonding, extending connectivity to sites where terrestrial options are limited.

That connectivity is backed by centralized management through Digi Remote Manager, giving enterprise IT teams visibility and control across hundreds or thousands of locations without a truck roll to every site. Digi Remote Manager includes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets IT teams connect the AI assistant of their choice for fleet-wide monitoring and automation, as well as Digi Remote Reach, which provides single-click access to devices connected behind the extender, from a point-of-sale terminal to a building sensor, with no VPN, cloud proxy or added cost.

For teams that want a ready-to-use AI option, Digi Artificial Network Intelligence (DANI), a purpose-built AI agent available as a value-added service, lets operators ask questions in plain language and identify potential issues before they cause downtime.

“The best cellular signal and the telco closet are rarely in the same place,” said Tony Puopolo, President, Digi Managed Solutions. “Digi EX61 lets organizations mount connectivity exactly where signal performs best, indoors or outdoors, helping reduce installation costs. Digi offers flexible management options to match your team’s needs. Choose Digi Ventus for a fully managed, plug-and-play solution or opt for Digi 360 and Digi Remote Manager with MCP server to run your network your way, under your control.”

“Digi EX61 can bond with a wired connection, a second Digi cellular router or Starlink over Ethernet for added resilience,” said Landon Reese, Vice President of Product Management, Digi Managed Solutions. “However organizations choose to deploy and manage it, the result is more ways for distributed sites to stay connected.”

Rugged, Indoor/Outdoor 5G, Wherever Signal Is Strongest

Digi EX61 is built around 3GPP Release 17 5G enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and carrier aggregation, in an IP66-rated enclosure rated for a -40°C to 70°C operating range. A single weather-sealed, PoE-capable Ethernet cable carries both power and data back to existing routers and switches, and GSMA SGP.32-compliant eSIM with zero-touch, bootstrap-profile provisioning lets IT teams activate connectivity and switch carriers remotely, without a truck roll.

Key capabilities include:

  • Primary 5G or automatic failover: Use EX61 as a primary 5G connection, or as automatic failover from wired to wireless. A second wireless connection (DSDS) adds tertiary failover, or provides a backup when no wired link exists.
  • Indoor/outdoor flexibility: An IP66-rated enclosure and a -40°C to 70°C operating range support mounting on a wall, ceiling or outdoor pole, wherever reception is strongest.
  • Single-cable PoE installation: One weather-sealed Ethernet cable carries both power and data to the extender.
  • Multi-carrier eSIM: GSMA SGP.32-compliant eSIM with zero-touch, bootstrap-profile provisioning for remote carrier activation and switching.
  • WAN diversity: Adds low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, such as Starlink, as an additional failover option over Ethernet, with support for WAN bonding.

Digi EX61 extends the 2026 Digi cellular portfolio alongside Digi EX60, Digi IX25 and Digi TX65, providing organizations with a consistent approach to secure, managed cellular connectivity across distributed environments.

Availability

Digi EX61, models EX61-5B-0N and EX61-5C-0R, is available beginning November 3, 2026 through Digi global sales channels and authorized partners as part of Digi 360 or Digi Ventus. Digi 360 combines purpose-built hardware, Digi Remote Manager, an industry-leading limited lifetime warranty and 24x7x365 support in a single subscription. Digi Ventus is a fully managed solution alternative that bundles hardware, multi-carrier data and intelligent monitoring into one monthly subscription.

Digi EX61 is available in a North American model certified for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, and a global model for all other regions.

Key Terms

esim technical
An esim is a small, built-in electronic SIM card inside a phone, tablet or connected device that stores mobile network credentials digitally instead of using a removable plastic card. For investors it matters because it changes how carriers sell and manage subscriptions, lowers logistics costs for device makers, enables easier switching between networks or plans (including global roaming), and expands opportunities in Internet-of-Things connectivity and recurring revenue services.
carrier aggregation technical
Carrier aggregation is a wireless network technique that combines two or more separate frequency bands (radio channels) so a mobile device can send and receive more data at once, boosting speed and capacity. For investors, it affects how well a carrier can serve customers and use its spectrum, influencing customer experience, network costs, device compatibility, and potential revenue—think of it as opening extra lanes on a highway to reduce traffic and carry more goods.
embb technical
eMBB (enhanced Mobile Broadband) is a 5G use case that prioritizes much higher data speeds and greater capacity for mobile devices, enabling applications like high‑definition video streaming, fast downloads, and richer augmented/virtual reality experiences. It works by using wider radio bandwidths, more advanced antenna technologies (such as massive MIMO), and higher frequency bands to carry larger amounts of data per user; it is distinct from other 5G categories that emphasize ultra‑low latency (URLLC) or massive device connectivity (mMTC). A key limitation is that eMBB’s very high speeds often depend on network density and spectrum characteristics, so performance can vary by location and available spectrum.
