What Dividends Paid Means for Healthcare Companies

Dividends paid records the cash a company handed to shareholders across the latest fiscal year. In healthcare, the payers are mostly large pharmaceutical and medical device businesses, whose patent-protected cash flows support a dividend that rises in small steps for decades. Most biotechnology firms pay nothing at all, since research programs consume every dollar they raise, so this ranking covers one mature slice of a very broad sector.

Why It Matters in Healthcare

For the mature end of the sector, the payout is a statement about confidence: a company commits to a stream of cash years before it knows which compounds replace the ones going off patent. That is also the limitation. A pipeline setback changes the coverage of a payout long before the payout itself moves, because boards defend the dividend and let the ratio stretch instead. Reading it beside earnings and cash flow keeps that gap visible.

What to Read Alongside

Read it beside Net Income to gauge what share of profit leaves the company, Free Cash Flow to test whether cash covered the payment, and Share Buybacks for the other half of shareholder returns.

This list ranks the total dollars paid out over the latest fiscal year, so the largest companies lead it; a big payout says nothing about the yield a share buys today. A company whose balance sheet runs above 150 times its market cap is left out, because at that gap the accounts are not in US dollars.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by dividends paid as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Size floor: A company qualifies at $500 million in market cap or above. Below that, one mis-stated figure outranks the companies the list is about.
  • Currency check: A company whose annual revenue runs above 15 times its market cap is left out, because at that gap the two figures are not in the same currency.
  • Currency check: A company whose balance sheet runs above 150 times its market cap is left out for the same reason.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
