What Dividends Paid Means for US-listed Companies

Dividends paid is the cash a company actually sent to its shareholders over the latest fiscal year, taken from the financing section of the cash flow statement. Because the figure is a dollar total rather than a rate, the ranking sorts by size, and the leaders tend to be large, mature, cash-generating businesses paying ordinary rates. A big total can sit beside a modest yield when the market value is huge, and a small total beside a generous one.

Why Dividends Paid Matters Less Than It Seems

The total shows what a company chose to return in cash rather than reinvest or use to repay debt, which is useful beside net income and free cash flow. On its own, though, the payment carries no information about yield, consistency, or coverage. A single special dividend lifts one year; a cut appears only in the following year's figure; and companies that return cash mainly through share repurchases look small here even when total shareholder returns are large.

What to Read Alongside

Read it next to Net Income for the earnings behind the payment, Free Cash Flow to see whether cash covered it, and Share Buybacks for the other channel companies use to return cash.

This list ranks the total dollars paid out over the latest fiscal year, so the largest companies lead it; a big payout says nothing about the yield a share buys today. A company whose balance sheet runs above 150 times its market cap is left out, because at that gap the accounts are not in US dollars.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by dividends paid as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Size floor: A company qualifies at $500 million in market cap or above. Below that, one mis-stated figure outranks the companies the list is about.
  • Currency check: A company whose annual revenue runs above 15 times its market cap is left out, because at that gap the two figures are not in the same currency.
  • Currency check: A company whose balance sheet runs above 150 times its market cap is left out for the same reason.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
