What Net Income Means for US-listed Companies

Net income is the bottom line of the income statement, what remains after every operating cost, interest charge, tax, and one-time item has been subtracted from revenue. It is the accountant's final answer to profitability, and because it rolls up decisions about depreciation schedules, impairments, and restructuring charges, it can move for reasons that have little to do with the underlying cash engine of the business.

Why Net Income Matters Less Than It Seems

Net income anchors earnings per share, the P/E ratio, and most dividend coverage calculations, which gives it outsized weight in headline coverage. A firm that grows profit consistently across cycles tends to have real pricing power and disciplined cost control. Even so, GAAP profit includes non-cash charges and one-time items that diverge from operating reality, which is why the figure is best read alongside cash flow rather than treated as the final word.

What to Read Alongside

Pair net income with [Free Cash Flow](/financials/top-free-cash-flow-stocks/) to test whether reported profit translates into cash, [Gross Margin](/financials/top-gross-margin-stocks/) for the pricing power behind the profit, and [Return on Equity](/financials/top-roe-stocks/) for how efficiently equity produced it.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by net income as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
