What Net Income Means for Technology Companies
Net income is the bottom line after every expense, including the stock-based compensation that funds a large share of engineering payroll. In technology, that non-cash charge often pulls reported profit meaningfully below the cash the business actually generates, which is why many tech firms publish adjusted figures alongside GAAP and why the gap between the two numbers has become a debate in its own right about what profit really means in the sector.
Why It Matters Less in Technology
Platform businesses can show strong net income once scale arrives because incremental customers cost little to serve, and operating leverage compounds at scale. Yet GAAP profit understates cash generation by the full amount of stock-based compensation, while adjusted profit overstates economic earnings by the same amount. Neither number is wrong, but reading either in isolation misses the dilution pressure that stock-based pay places on per-share value over time.

- Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
- Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
- Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
- Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
