What Dividends Paid Means for Energy Companies

Dividends paid is the cash a producer or refiner returned to shareholders over the latest fiscal year, from the financing section of the cash flow statement. Energy cash flows track commodity prices, so many companies split the payment in two: a modest base dividend sized to survive a low-price year, plus variable or special distributions that scale with realized prices when the cycle is generous.

Why It Matters Less in Energy

That structure makes a single year's total an unreliable guide to the next one. A figure here can halve without any change in policy, because the variable half was never a commitment, and the same company can sit near the top of this ranking in one cycle and far below it in another. The base payment, reserve life, and balance sheet strength describe the durable part; the total alone does not.

What to Read Alongside

Read it next to Net Income for the earnings the payment came from, Free Cash Flow for the cash the year produced, and Share Buybacks for the other flexible channel producers use.

This list ranks the total dollars paid out over the latest fiscal year, so the largest companies lead it; a big payout says nothing about the yield a share buys today. A company whose balance sheet runs above 150 times its market cap is left out, because at that gap the accounts are not in US dollars.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by dividends paid as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Size floor: A company qualifies at $500 million in market cap or above. Below that, one mis-stated figure outranks the companies the list is about.
  • Currency check: A company whose annual revenue runs above 15 times its market cap is left out, because at that gap the two figures are not in the same currency.
  • Currency check: A company whose balance sheet runs above 150 times its market cap is left out for the same reason.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
