Most Indebted Industrials Companies: What Long-Term Debt Tells You
Long-term debt in industrials tends to move with the economic cycle. Capital intensity is high across aerospace, machinery, transportation, and construction equipment, and firms routinely borrow to fund new capacity, acquisitions, and working capital needs at expansion peaks. The largest absolute debt balances typically sit at diversified industrials or airlines that manage complex fleets of long-lived assets, where steady operating cash flow supports investment-grade access to the bond market.
Why Debt Isn't Always a Red Flag in Industrials
Industrial firms with durable franchises and diversified end markets often carry meaningful long-term debt as a rational way to fund long-lived assets. Still, debt loads taken on late in an expansion can prove heavy when orders soften, and industrials that lever up for acquisitions just before a cyclical turn sometimes find themselves refinancing at worse terms. Watching debt against cycle position and backlog visibility is usually more informative than the absolute figure.
What to Read Alongside
Pair long-term debt with [Free Cash Flow](/financials/top-free-cash-flow-stocks/industrials/) to gauge servicing capacity against cyclical cash generation, [EBITDA](/financials/top-ebitda-stocks/industrials/) for leverage ratios relative to through-cycle earnings, and [Cash & Equivalents](/financials/top-cash-rich-stocks/industrials/) for the net-debt picture after available liquidity.

How this ranking is built
Companies are ranked by long-term debt as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.
- Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
- Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
- Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
- Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
