Most Indebted Consumer Cyclical Companies: What Long-Term Debt Tells You

Long-term debt in consumer cyclical is highly sensitive to the demand cycle. Auto makers, travel operators, hotel owners, and restaurant chains routinely carry heavy debt tied to capital-intensive operations and working capital. The business model amplifies leverage effects: when demand is strong, debt-funded expansion looks prudent and returns are high; when the cycle turns, fixed obligations remain while revenue compresses, which is why the sector has a long history of distress in downturns among otherwise well-known brands.

Why It Matters in Consumer Cyclical

Large absolute debt balances are structurally common in autos, hospitality, and leisure because of the capital assets involved, and a strong franchise can carry meaningful leverage across multiple cycles. Even so, consumer cyclical earnings can disappear quickly in a slowdown, and high absolute debt paired with thin margins or declining same-store sales is the pattern that has historically preceded problems in the sector, even at category leaders.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by long-term debt as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
