What EBITDA Means for Consumer Cyclical Companies
EBITDA is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, a view of operating profit before financing and accounting allocations. In consumer cyclical businesses, from retailers and restaurants to autos, apparel, and leisure, the figure reflects a demand base that moves with household discretionary spending. Store fleets, distribution centers, and branded assets generate meaningful depreciation and amortization, so EBITDA typically runs notably above operating income for firms in the sector.
Why It Matters in Consumer Cyclical
EBITDA offers a way to compare retailers and brand owners with different lease accounting, debt levels, and acquisition histories on a shared footing. It is also commonly used in retail leveraged finance. Still, the metric is less meaningful when inventory risk or remodel cycles are active, because those translate into working-capital swings and maintenance capex EBITDA ignores. Margins can also compress rapidly through a downturn, so peak-cycle figures tend to overstate sustainable operating economics.
What to Read Alongside
Pair EBITDA with [Free Cash Flow](/financials/top-free-cash-flow-stocks/consumer-cyclical/) to capture working-capital swings and maintenance capex effects the metric sets aside, [Gross Margin](/financials/top-gross-margin-stocks/consumer-cyclical/) for pricing power and product mix, and [Debt](/financials/most-indebted-stocks/consumer-cyclical/) to frame leverage against operating earnings.

How this ranking is built
Companies are ranked by ebitda as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.
- Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
- Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
- Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
- Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
