What EBITDA Means for Basic Materials Companies
EBITDA is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, exposing operating profit before capital structure and accounting choices. In basic materials, miners, chemical producers, paper and forestry firms, and metals processors all carry enormous long-lived assets tied to mines, mills, and processing plants. Depreciation and amortization charges are therefore large, and EBITDA typically runs meaningfully above operating income across the sector, which is why it dominates industry-level valuation conversations.
Why It Matters in Basic Materials
Commodity prices drive sector results, and fixed asset bases produce strong operating leverage on price moves. EBITDA isolates that operating response without the distortion of different capital structures or acquisition-era depreciation schedules. The D&A being added back reflects genuine ore depletion and plant wear, and mining reserves require ongoing finding-and-development spend to replace. Cross-cycle EBITDA is usually more informative than a single-period figure captured at a price peak or trough.
What to Read Alongside
Pair EBITDA with [Capex](/financials/biggest-capex-stocks/basic-materials/) to size the sustaining and growth reinvestment the metric sets aside, [Free Cash Flow](/financials/top-free-cash-flow-stocks/basic-materials/) for the cash that survives through the cycle, and [Debt](/financials/most-indebted-stocks/basic-materials/) to contextualize leverage against operating earnings.

How this ranking is built
Companies are ranked by ebitda as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.
- Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
- Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
- Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
- Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
