Top Consumer Cyclical Stocks by Return on Assets

Top consumer cyclical companies ranked by return on assets, latest annual filings.

What Return on Assets Means for Consumer Cyclical Companies

Return on assets compares profit with the whole base a company works, which in consumer cyclical means stores, inventory, factories and, for some, a lending arm. Retailers that turn stock quickly can earn respectable returns on a modest base, since the same shelf space produces sales many times a year. Automakers and other heavy manufacturers earn much less on far larger bases, so the sector's ranking largely reflects how much capital a model needs.

Why It Matters in Consumer Cyclical

For retail the ratio is close to the heart of the business, because turning the same inventory more often is how the model creates value, and the measure captures that directly. Two adjustments keep it honest. Lease accounting brought store leases onto the balance sheet, which lowered the ratio for lease-heavy chains without changing anything they do. And discretionary demand swings, so a strong year reflects the consumer as much as the operator.

What to Read Alongside

Pair return on assets with Return on Equity to see what debt contributes, Net Margin to tell thin-margin, fast-turning models from richer ones, and Total Assets for the size of the base being worked.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by return on assets as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Size floor: A company qualifies at $1 billion in annual revenue or above, so a small filer with a freak ratio cannot top the list.
  • Value range: Only figures above 0% and up to 100% qualify.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
