What Cash Reserves Mean for Utilities Companies

Cash and equivalents captures the liquid balances a utility holds against operating needs and near-term capex. In utilities, regulated returns and predictable cash flow mean firms generally do not accumulate large reserves. Excess cash is typically deployed into the rate base through continual capital programs, paid out as dividends to the income-oriented shareholder base, or used to service the significant debt common to capital-intensive regulated businesses.

Why Cash Matters Less in Utilities

Utilities rarely sit on large cash balances because regulated returns discourage holding excess cash that earns below the authorized rate of return, so retained reserves create a drag on aggregate profitability. Instead, steady regulated cash flow itself functions as the liquidity reserve, supplemented by large undrawn credit facilities. When a utility does show an unusual cash build, it often signals a pending acquisition, a bond issuance awaiting deployment, or proceeds from an asset sale.

What to Read Alongside

Pair cash reserves with Long-term Debt to frame the net leverage picture, Free Cash Flow to see how much cash survives the continual capex program, and CapEx to gauge the rate base investment intensity.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by cash & equivalents as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
