In healthcare, the figure plays a split role, because a clinical-stage biotech with years of trial spending ahead reads cash very differently from a mature pharmaceutical firm using its balance sheet as an acquisition war chest. For one, reserves are runway; for the other, they are optionality to license or acquire pipeline when internal research falls short.
