What Total Assets Means for Basic Materials Companies
Total assets in basic materials is written in mines, smelters, chemical plants, mills and timberland. These are long-lived properties, developed over years and then depleted as ore or timber is taken out, and they come with the stockpiles, spare parts and receivables that a heavy processing chain needs. The recorded figure is development cost less depletion, drawn from the latest annual accounts. Nothing is netted off for the debt raised to build any of it.
Why It Matters in Basic Materials
Total assets counts in this sector because the plant is the output; a smelter or a mine has a physical capacity, so a price move falls straight through to profit on that fixed cost base when the cycle turns up. The limitation is what the base leaves out. Ore still in the ground is not an asset until development spending has been recorded against it, so a company sitting on a large undeveloped deposit can show a modest total.

Total assets measure balance-sheet size, not worth: a bank holding customer deposits carries assets many times its market value, while a software company of the same market value carries a fraction of them. Above 150 times market cap the accounts are not in US dollars, and the company is left out.
How this ranking is built
Companies are ranked by total assets as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.
- Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
- Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
- Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
- Size floor: A company qualifies at $500 million in market cap or above. Below that, one mis-stated figure outranks the companies the list is about.
- Currency check: A company whose annual revenue runs above 15 times its market cap is left out, because at that gap the two figures are not in the same currency.
- Currency check: A company whose balance sheet runs above 150 times its market cap is left out for the same reason.
- Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).

Frequently asked questions
Does a large asset base mean a mining company has more resources?
Not reliably. The balance sheet records what has been spent to acquire and develop a property, so a mature operation with heavy past investment can carry more than an explorer holding a far richer undeveloped deposit. Reserve and resource statements, published separately from the accounts, are where quantity and grade are disclosed. Balance sheet size answers a spending question, and the reserve report answers the geology question.
Why does depletion matter for materials balance sheets?
A mine or a quarry consumes itself as it produces. Depletion charges write the developed property down in step with the tonnes extracted, so the recorded value declines through the life of the operation even while output holds steady. A shrinking total can therefore describe a productive asset moving through its life rather than a business in retreat, which is why reserve life is read alongside the balance sheet.
